An established equipment rental organization is seeking an entrepreneurial General Manager in California’s Central Coast region to build and lead a new equipment rental division. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity with full P&L ownership and responsibility for developing the business from the ground up, including its market strategy, fleet, team, operating model, and regional growth plan.

The ideal candidate is a proven equipment rental leader and business builder who combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution. This individual will have the autonomy to shape a growing rental operation while leveraging the resources, customer relationships, and infrastructure of an established organization.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a new construction equipment rental business, establishing the strategy, operating model, team, and growth plan.
  • Develop and execute a go-to-market strategy, including target markets, customer segments, pricing, service offerings, and geographic expansion.
  • Maintain full P&L ownership with responsibility for budgeting, forecasting, pricing, capital allocation, profitability, and overall financial performance.
  • Establish 12- and 24-month revenue plans and develop strategies to achieve growth and profitability targets.
  • Build and optimize a construction equipment fleet, including excavators, loaders, lifts, compaction equipment, and related assets.
  • Manage fleet utilization, uptime, maintenance, lifecycle planning, and return on invested capital.
  • Establish scalable processes for dispatch, equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, billing, compliance, and customer support.
  • Develop relationships with general contractors, subcontractors, public-sector organizations, and other construction equipment customers.
  • Identify new business opportunities and develop programs that increase customer retention, fleet utilization, and profitable revenue.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing rental team with clear expectations and accountability.
  • Establish KPIs and use financial, operational, and fleet data to evaluate performance and guide business decisions.
  • Identify opportunities for future branch and geographic expansion as the business grows.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in equipment rental, construction services, or a closely related industry.
  • 3+ years of direct P&L ownership with responsibility for multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Demonstrated success launching, scaling, or significantly improving a rental operation, business unit, service line, branch network, or regional operation.
  • Strong knowledge of construction equipment rental operations, fleet economics, utilization, equipment applications, market pricing, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience developing business with contractors and other construction industry customers.
  • Ability to use fleet utilization data, forecasts, financial models, and operating KPIs to make strategic business decisions.
  • Proven experience recruiting, coaching, developing, and holding teams accountable.
  • Strong business development, negotiation, customer relationship, and executive communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to build processes and make decisions in a growing operation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with RentalMan or another rental management platform preferred.
  • Multi-state operating or regulatory experience is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% to branch locations, customer and project sites, vendor facilities, and industry events.
